Mandalas
Mandala is the Sanskrit word for circle.
As a symbol of the cosmos or universe, a traditional mandala is a square containing a circle. The square represents earth. The circle symbolizes the divine.
The psychoanalyst Carl Jung believed that the mandala represents the Self and that drawing a mandala gives a person a sacred space to meet that Self.
A circle can symbolize:
Infinity, Unity, Wholeness, Divinity, Emptiness,
Fullness, Samsara – the cycle of life
I have come to see my life as a mandala. At the center I place my highest values and aspirations. There too, is the promise of clear seeing and pure wisdom. The surround of the mandala contains all the rest of life – hopes and dreams, fears and aversions, our relationships, the peace we seek and the unsettled way we often feel. Movement and Stillness. Nothing is excluded. The opportunity is to nurture awareness and notice how solid or transparent we can allow our perimeter to be, how open can we be at our center.
In each of these Mandala paintings I am working with the geometry of the circle overlayed or inserted into layers of images, paint, history, accident, intention. I ask myself can I wrap my arms around the mess and beauty that is our life and make sense of it? Love it as it is? Work with what’s there? Highlight its beauty? Include the darkness? Find the center?

Layers of becoming
In these paintings, the process is the plan - In other words no plan! I lay down color and drag it around the panel with what ever energy is arising. Then I sand the panel to free the texture through the paint. On top of this I layer skins of various prints or images. The dialogue with the piece as it evolves is somewhat like adding melodies, or even lyrics, to a beat. This is what's here! What will make it sing? Or maybe they are landscapes that I am mapping and each small detail is a memory or a marker. In this way each piece evolves becoming what it is meant to be - for now!
